Butler girls basketball beats McDowell; Knoch’s Ireland wins Redbank Valley Invite title: Roundup

Butler girls basketball closed the non-section portion of the schedule with a 62-47 win Saturday over Erie McDowell.

Malina McElroy and Jules Lockwood led the 5-1 Golden Tornado with 14 points each; Lockwood drained three 3-pointers in the second quarter as Butler built a 38-18 halftime lead.

Campbell Clouse and Emily Hoffer had eight points apiece. The Tornado have five days off before a section opener Friday at North Hills.

North Catholic goes 0-2 at She Got Game Tournament — The Trojanettes left Washington, D.C., with consecutive losses against difficult opponents, falling 57-37 Saturday to Somerset Academy (Fla.) and 54-35 Sunday against Our Lady of Good Counsel (Md.).

Brady Wehner had 12 points in the first game and 19 in the second, and Harmony Jones had 11 Saturday.

Seneca Valley lost its game Saturday against Valor Christian (Col.) 43-34. No result was reported from the Raiders’ Sunday game.

Girls wrestling

Butler went 3-2 at the Trinity Hiller Holiday Duals, beating Trinity 41-36, Southmoreland 36-30 and Avella 48-18.

The Tornado’s losses came against Shaler and Connellsville.

Middleweight Anastasia Manchester went 4-1 with three pins in the first three matches and a forfeit, with her only loss coming against PIAA medalist Abigail Dolanch (Avella) in the final match of the day.

Lightweight Sienna Stutz and Brin Zehmisch also went 4-1 with two pins and two forfeits.

Seneca Valley 3rd, Knoch 4th at Redbank Valley Invitational Reigning state medalist Braylee Ireland had a perfect day for the Knights, winning all four of her matches at 124 pounds by pin to claim the Doghouse Rumble title.

Meanwhile, the Raiders got six wrestlers into the championship or third-place bout to finish third to claim 115.5 points. Everly Harrell (106) lost in the final to Fort Cherry’s Ella Trahan by technical fall, and Kaeleigh Tuell (148) and Hannah Hornick (170) won their third-place bouts by decision and pin, respectively.

The Knights’ Carma Forty (142) finished second and Leila Crowe (13) took home bronze. Knoch scored 100 points.

Boys wrestling

Mars went 2-3 at the Hampton Dawg Duals, beating Fox Chapel 40-33 and Hampton 45-30. The Planets’ losses came against Latrobe, Thomas Jefferson and Indiana.

Freshman middleweight Olympic Serrao was the only Mars wrestler to go 5-0, winning with three pins, a technical fall and a forfeit. Parker Joseph went 4-1 with two techs, a decision and a forfeit victory.

Schedule change

Moniteau girls basketball’s home game against Portersville Christian was postponed due to Saturday’s snow storm to an as-yet-determined date.
