How the road to (cancer) recovery included the road to the hospital

After driving trucks for 3 Rivers Ice Cream for more than 30 years, Nelson Clark, of Butler, started hauling a different kind of cargo in his retirement: people with cancer.

Clark started driving for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program in the late 2000s after his wife, Anne, fought breast cancer.

“I just want to be able to pay back because of my wife,” he said.

Cancer patients need rides for medical appointments for a variety of reasons: They can’t drive because of their illness or because of the medications they are taking, their family members or caregivers can’t go on a certain day of the week, or their caregivers need respite.

The program remains active in the Pittsburgh region.
