Freeport girls soccer star Camryn Woods player of the year: See 2025 Butler County all-stars

This past girls soccer season isn’t one Freeport will soon forget.

“I knew we had a good team coming in this year, and the girls came in with the right attitude,” Yellowjackets coach Steve Kukic said. “They were kinda on a mission.”

Freeport posted a 21-2 record, winning its first WPIAL Class 2A crown and reaching the PIAA semifinals. Junior forward Camryn Woods was at the team’s forefront.

“She’s that good,” Kukic said. “She can beat two people. Her speed and her physicality, it’s pretty unmatched. Plus, it just opens spots up for anyone else. ... She picked and (chose) her times to go at them.”

Woods pinned up 26 goals and 16 assists “while being double- and triple-teamed,” Kukic said.

The coach also took notice of her fiery attitude on the field, one that was evident as the ’Jackets battled with section rival Burrell in the district final. Woods prodded an assist to Elena Jenkins on her trophy-winning goal late in that matchup.

“You have to have that mentality if you’re gonna be a Division I athlete,” Kukic said. “She always seems to have a chip on her shoulder. She would create any sort of animosity towards (an opponent). Anything to get her fired up for the game.

“That’s half the battle, really. If you come in and you compete hard, then you can make up for other things. But if you compete hard and have the skill that she has, it creates problems for other teams.”

Woods is also an Ohio University verbal commit.

“It’s been a blessing to have two years with her — and to get one more,” Kukic said.
