Neubert: Why Truthantrub 5K is quickly becoming my new favorite Thanksgiving tradition
My Thanksgiving weekend included a few of the usual traditions — joining friends for a short run followed by donuts and beer, watching giant balloons cruise through New York City and, of course, eating too much turkey and pumpkin pie at family dinner.
But Saturday I joined friends and neighbors for what’s become a new favorite holiday activity. I ran the 3rd Annual Truthantrub 5K in my hometown of Saxonburg. The event is quickly becoming a tradition for residents, family and friends.
Race director Mike Formica was a little concerned chilly weather might impact participation, but he was pleased a record number of more than 300 registered.
“This is a fundraiser for Knoch’s cross country and track teams, so we’re happy that so many pre-registered to support the race,” he said.
Formica was impressed by the number of young kids who ran the fun run/walk and hopes their love of running continues. The 1-kilometer loop from Roebling Park to Main Street nearly doubled in participation this year with 50 runners and walkers, half of them kids ages 10 and under. The exuberant youngsters looked like a flock of colorful birds flying down Isabella Street. Mason Taylor, a 10-year-old Butler girl, finished first with a time of 5:01.
Youth were also well represented in the 5K field with 40 of the 214 finishers ages 19 and younger. That includes first-place male, Nathan Kociela (16:58), and third-place male, Sarver’s David Kristine (17:25). Natalie Zolinas, a 16-year-old Butler girl, won the women’s race in 21:04 while 14-year-old Raegan Ruckus finished third (21:51).
Cold temperatures didn’t dampen the spirits of participants, spectators or volunteers. Hand warmers were included in race packets. Turkey-themed hats, sweatshirts and knee socks were popular among runners. Knoch High School Girls Track and Cross Country Coach Amy Formica dressed as a festive turkey to present competitive awards.
Awards included the usual overall and age group seasonal medals. Truthantrub also includes team competition, with top three teams earning turkey trophies and a chance to win a special prize. The second-place team, the nine-member Thunder Chickens from Sarver, won a large chocolate turkey from sponsor Speckled Hen Chocolates.
Thanksgiving is past, but the season of holiday runs has just begun. At 10 a.m. Saturday, enjoy the raucous, festive crowd on Pittsburgh’s North Shore for the 40th Jingle Bell Run 5K. The event is part of a national fundraising effort for the Arthritis Foundation. For more information or to register, visit events.arthritis.org/jbrpittsburgh.
At the same time but smaller and closer to home, Lutheran Senior Life Abundant Lights 5K and 1-Mile runs multiple loops of paved Passavant Community drives. The course is well marked, and there will be volunteers to guide you. Sign up online at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Zelienople/AbundantLightsK or at Abundant Life Center on race day.
At 9 a.m. Dec. 13, join what’s called “Cranberry’s Jolliest Race” as the Run Santa Run 5K and Jolly Mile dashes through Graham Park’s slightly rolling paths and drives. The event also boasts “The Jolliest Swag” with Santa logo pants, Santa hat and more. Kids in the Reindeer Ramble (ages 10 and under) take home a plush reindeer, Santa hat and medal.
