Snow-covered roads affect morning commute in Butler
Butler County residents woke up to snow-covered driveways and roads Tuesday morning, Dec. 2, which will impact the morning commute for those who must travel to work.
The first significant snowfall of the season is expected to continue through early afternoon.
Butler County was placed under a winter weather advisory from the National Weather Service beginning at midnight Tuesday and will remain under that advisory until 1 p.m.
On Monday, Liana Lupo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, said the heaviest snowfall rates would happen between 7 and 9 a.m. Tuesday.
“It's looking like a fairly even spread across the county for snow accumulation,” Lupo said. “Snow should be out of Butler County around noon.”
Lupo advised caution for drivers who must be on the road as the snow falls Tuesday.
“Give yourself plenty of extra time, and take plenty of precautions because roads are going to be extra slick,” Lupo said.
Crews from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission began treating state roads Monday night, according to a news release issued Monday afternoon, Dec. 1. PennDOT also is advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel Tuesday and for those who must drive to exercise caution.
Motorists are advised to use headlights, use the car’s defroster and wipers, keep a safe following distance, keep an emergency kit handy and to avoid driving too fast for conditions.
