Nicholas Double

Double

Nicholas Reid Double, 87, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Butler, passed away at his residence in Lakeland on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born Feb. 24, 1938, in Connoquenessing Township, the son of the late Troy D. and Vera (Henry) Double.

Reid graduated from Butler High School in 1956 and was of the Presbyterian faith. Over the years he held several jobs, including a few seasons picking apples at Treesdale, and he served on the township supervisor board for 12 years. He later spent 38 years with Armco Steel, retiring in 1996, and where he made many lifelong friends. Reid also served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, spending 18 months stationed in Germany.

He was a member of the William H. Miller Lodge No. 769 in Butler, the Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle, and proudly drove his little yellow roadster in parades for the Pittsburgh’s Syria Shriners to help raise money for the Shriner Hospitals. Reid was also involved with the Butler Shriners Luncheon Club, the Butler Shriners Caravan No. 14, the Butler Elks No. 170, the Butler Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 45, the Three Rivers Hillbilly Clan No. 53, Butler VFW Post 249 the American Legion Post 778.

Together with his wife, Barb, he collected classic cars, rode motorcycles and traveled extensively — taking around 25 cruises and visiting most of the 50 states. They retired to Sandpiper Golf and Country Club in Lakeland, Fla. in 2002, where he enjoyed many rounds of golf and participated in the neighborhood bowling league. They often said they had enjoyed all the facets of their lives together, had done more than they ever believed possible, and hoped they had left behind many wonderful memories.

Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Barbara L. (Crowe) Double, whom he married June 7, 1958. They had no children, but they had many nieces and nephews who were like their “kids.” They always said they were blessed with the greatest bunch of kids God could have ever given them and that they loved them all to the moon and stars. Also surviving are two sisters, Mona (Bob) Ford and Nancy Lumley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his four brothers and three sisters.
