Pittsburgh Riverhounds win first USL Championship title, beat FC Tulsa in final
It required penalty kicks for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to make club history, but it was worth it.
The Riverhounds beat FC Tulsa on PKs 5-3 Saturday after a scoreless draw in regulation and overtime to hoist their first USL Championship league title trophy in 26 years.
Goalie Eric Dick was named MVP after making five saves at ONEOK Field in Tulsa, Ok., for his 16th shutout this season. That and his 30 blank sheets overall with the club are Riverhounds records.
Bertin Jacquesson, Robbie Mertz, Chase Boone, Sean Suber and Beto Ydrach all scored in the shootout.
Pittsburgh became the first USL Championship club to win a title without allowing a goal during the playoffs, a streak that dates back to the regular season for 632 minutes.
