Butler Township to upgrade Route 8 intersection traffic signals

Nearly 2 years after receiving a grant from the state, Butler Township officials are moving forward with traffic signal upgrades at a Route 8 intersection.

The Butler Township Board of Commissioners voted on Monday, Oct. 20, to award a bid to Bronder Technical Services for upgrades to traffic signals at the intersection between Route 8 and McCalmont and Vogel roads.

According to township manager Tom Knights, the project will cost about $300,000 and be covered primarily through the state’s Automated Red Light Enforcement Transportation Enhancements Grant Program.

According to PennDOT’s website, the grant program was established in 2010 to “fund worthwhile, relatively low-cost projects that improve the safety and mobility of the traveling public.”

PennDOT originally announced in January 2023 it would award just under $250,000 toward traffic signal modernization in the intersection. Knights said the township will cover any remaining cost.

Work will include new mast arms, signal heads and yellow reflective back plates for the heads, according to a release from PennDOT.

Knights said that work on the signals is expected to begin in May or June of 2026 and last around five months.
