Butler woman charged with car insurance fraud
A Butler woman is charged with insurance fraud after allegedly filing a false claim to repair damages from a previous crash that was already denied coverage.
Cynthia Diane Williams, 48, was charged Wednesday, Nov. 12, with felony insurance fraud following an investigation between April to November.
Police said they were contacted Aug. 6 by Allstate Insurance Company for suspected insurance fraud in Butler Township involving a Nissan Rogue.
Allstate told police that on April 27, the woman filed a claim for collision damage to the vehicle after it was involved in a crash in a retail outlet parking lot. Allstate denied the claim for lack of coverage and said Williams then added the vehicle to the coverage plan.
Williams made a second claim for the vehicle May 7 for similar damage resulting from a second collision. The woman reported she had struck a deer in the second collision, police said.
Allstate examined the vehicle and found the damage was not consistent with the claim. Police said Allstate conducted an investigation into the repairs done after the initial crash and Williams told them her husband had purchased parts from a family friend to repair the vehicle. Police said an email contact for the family friend, provided by Williams, was not verifiable.
Allstate then requested photos of the repairs and Williams allegedly sent them stock photos from the internet.
Williams reportedly told police later she had the vehicle repaired in Ohio and payed in cash, but she did not remember where the repairs were made.
Police interviewed Williams on Nov. 4 when she reportedly told them there was no second crash and the second claim was for repairs caused by the initial crash. She told police after the initial crash, the vehicle was towed to her residence where it sat for a month before being towed to a repair shop.
Williams’ preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
