For the holiday season, the flying saucer won’t be the only fixture in downtown Mars.
The borough’s public works department hauled a large evergreen tree into downtown Mars and stood it near the famous flying saucer on Thursday morning, Nov. 13.
According to Mayor Gregg Hartung, the borough once had a tree planted in the area but when it got too large and had to be removed, a tree was sought for the space every November.
This year’s tree was donated by Stick City Brewing Company from a Christmas tree farm in Indiana County.
Now that the tree is in place, lights and ornaments will be added between now and the borough’s light up night event.
Light Up Mars is set for Saturday, Nov. 29. The mayor said an afternoon of festivities is planned prior to a tree-lighting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. and a parade at 6 p.m.
A Small Business Saturday Showcase kicks off the day’s events with a ribbon cutting for a new business, FYIE, at noon.
Horse and carriage rides, boarding at Agway, will follow from 2 to 6 p.m. At 3 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive via the carriage in town square.
The lighting of the tree and parade conclude the evening.
