College soccer: Local products help GCC men, women claim conference crowns

The men’s and women’s soccer teams at Grove City College recently won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title and are preparing for first-round NCAA Division III tournament games.

GCC’s men (15-2-2) will face Calvin University (Mich.) at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Geneva, N.Y.

Aidan Eck’s goal secured a 1-0 victory against Franciscan for the conference title on Saturday.

The Wolverines feature two Butler County natives in Ryan Merrick and Anthony D'Ippolito. Residents of Cranberry Township and Mars, respectively, they played in high school at Eden Christian Academy.

A midfielder, Merrick has seen action in 19 games with nine starts, and has tallied five goals and two assists.

D'Ippolito is a goalie with three goals allowed on 20 shots in 252 minutes of play this season.

Grove City’s women (13-4-2) will meet Illinois Tech at 1 p.m. Friday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Wolverines received a goal from Lauren Muhanna in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Waynesburg for the PAC championship.

GCC’s roster includes three Butler County products — midfielders Tori Stevenson (Butler High School) and Hannah Plunkard (Slippery Rock) and forward Emma Dailey (Karns City).

Stevenson leads the team with 16 goals. Plunkard has contributed three goals and four assists and Dailey two goals.
