Former car repair shop employee accused of stealing from employer, customers, coworker

A former employee of a Cranberry Township car repair shop is accused of stealing from the business, customers and a coworker.

Brandon Patrick Bartolomeo, 26, of Mars, was charged Friday, Nov. 7, with one felony count each of unlawful computer use and retail theft, four misdemeanor counts of receiving stolen property, three misdemeanor theft counts, and one misdemeanor count each of theft, criminal attempt at theft and selling sexual materials following incidents between Sept. 22 and Oct. 8.

Police said they had received reports of criminal incidents from management, customers and employees of NTB Tire & Service Centers in Cranberry Township that sparked the investigation.

Police learned that on Sept. 22 and Sept. 26, Bartolomeo was responsible for depositing checks of $664.28 and $110.23 into a Key Bank account, but the deposits were never recorded.

On Sept. 24, police said an 83-year-old customer visited the shop and was fraudulently told by Bartolomeo that all four tires needed to be replaced at a cost of $1,278.64. Bartolomeo reportedly lied and told the customer the POS system was down, and the customer should issue a check to Bartolomeo personally for the work.

Police said Bartolomeo later cashed the check and discounted the customer’s invoice to $0.

Bartolomeo was terminated from the company Oct. 7, police said. That day, Bartolomeo was observed taking $243.60 from the cash register and putting it into his pocket.

The following day, police said, Bartolomeo traveled to the residence of a 79-year-old customer, who had new tires installed Sept. 17. Bartolomeo reportedly told the customer their check had been damaged, and a new check for $604.32 was needed to pay for the tires.

Police said the customer issued a new check and also contacted a manger at the store, and payment on the check was subsequently stopped.

Police said they also learned that while Bartolomeo was borrowing a coworker’s cellphone, he sent to himself a nude photo of the coworker’s 27-year-old girlfriend. Police said Bartolomeo then began communicating with the coworker anonymously through a different phone number and claimed to have an affair with the girlfriend after sending the coworker the image.

A representative of Mavis Discount Tire, the parent company of NTB, was not immediately available for comment.

Bartolomeo’s preliminary hearing before District Judge Kevin Flaherty has not yet been scheduled.
