Slippery Rock launching women’s flag football team in coming years
Slippery Rock University announced Friday it is creating a varsity women’s flag football team, with the hopes of competing in the 2027-28 school year.
SRU will launch a fundraising campaign in early 2026 to support the program. The university cited the 2028 Summer Olympics, which will be held in the United States and will debut flag football, as well as “growing popularity” at the high school level as reasons for the launch in a news release.
“This emerging sport represents growth, inclusion, and opportunity, and we look forward to building a tradition of excellence that empowers additional female student-athletes to join our many highly successful athletic programs,” SRU president Karen Riley said in the news release. “We are deeply grateful to the SRU community for their vision, advocacy, and support in making this possible.”
The university said it will conduct a coaching search beginning in 2026 to provide time for the coach to recruit future athletes to the team.
