Freeport girls soccer ‘not done yet’ after Camryn Woods’ gutsy goal clinches first PIAA semifinal berth

ALTOONA — Camryn Woods has accomplished much during her varsity career, including All-WPIAL accolades, over 70 goals scored and time spent with the U.S. Olympic Development Program.

“Limited” is not a word normally associated with Freeport girls soccer’s junior forward, but it was Saturday.

Woods sprained a tendon in her right foot during Tuesday’s PIAA first-round playoff win against Fort LeBoeuf.

“I couldn’t walk on Wednesday,” she said. “But I was going to find a way to play today (Saturday’s quarterfinal against Lancaster Catholic). I was not thinking about sitting out.”

Woods said she needed to make something happen early in the game because she was not sure how long she would be effective.

In the fourth minute, she took a shot with her left foot that eluded Crusaders goalie Clare Bolesky, the lone score in Freeport’s 1-0 win at Mansion Park Stadium, in Altoona.

The Yellowjackets (20-1), winners of 19 straight, will face the winner of another quarterfinal played Saturday between Bedford and Burrell on Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.

Woods was seen visibly limping after the game, though she remained on the field and was at the center of multiple other scoring chances for Freeport.

“You could tell she was struggling near the end, but she’s a warrior,” Freeport coach Steve Kukic said. “She wanted to be out there.”

Woods’ decisive shot came as she was being escorted by a Crusaders defender to her right. Her boot came from 15 yards out and passed Bolesky, who dove to her left in an attempt to make the save.

Lancaster Catholic entered the game featuring four players with a combined 72 goals. Harper Bolesky (24 goals) and Naomi Dresch (22) paced that group, but the ’Jackets managed to shut out the potent lineup.

Freeport’s Alyssa Alcorn made seven saves while the team’s midfielders and backs cut off numerous centering passes and through balls. The goalie made a diving save near the left post on a shot from Harper Bolesky in the 64th minute.

Freeport’s Alyssa Cooper and CeCe Schlegel both kept shots from resulting in goals after Alcorn came off her line to thwart Crusader rushes in the first half.

“They played better than us,” Kukic said of the Crusaders (21-2). “They had us on our heels for much of the game and I’ve not seen that all season.

“Give us credit, though. We played a team that kept coming at us, found a way to win and had a clean sheet.”

Clare Bolesky had seven stops in the game.

Lancaster Catholic, which finished runner-up in District 3, reached the state playoffs for the first time in school history.

“The girls gave 100% the entire season,” Crusaders coach Emily Fix said. “We got to watch film on Freeport and it was something fresh, something new. You get to know the teams from your own district so well, it’s good to learn things about a team you’ve never heard of.

“Freeport is one of the most physical teams we’ve faced all year.”

Freeport won the first WPIAL title in program history Nov. 1 and will be making its initial appearance in the state semifinals.

“We’ve already made history, but we aren’t done yet,” Woods said.
