Oakland Twp. considers rewriting junkyard ordinance

OAKLAND TWP — Supervisors plan to rewrite two ordinances, which could affect property owners using their land as junk yards.

At the board’s meeting Wednesday, Nov. 5, supervisors tabled rewrites of the property standards ordinance, as well as the junkyard ordinance.

According to Oakland Township’s existing ordinances, a junkyard is defined as “any premises used for the collection, storage, processing and the sale of junk or the collection, storage, processing and sale of scrap metal.”

The township’s property standards ordinance maintains relatively broad language surrounding premises such as a junkyard.

“What we’re looking at is touching up language, because the actual language is so broad, that they almost overlap with each other. It’s never stated how many vehicles they can have,” supervisor Brian Hans said.

Though specifics on the new language were not immediately given, supervisors said the clarification was needed.

“We’re not really rewriting the whole thing, but we’re adjusting them aside each other, because they didn’t blend together,” Hans said.

Board chairman Shaun Krill said Wednesday night the board is also applying for a new PennDOT multimodal grant. The grant would give the township the funds needed to finish paving roads in the township that are still gravel roads.

Hans said the grant would help complete progress on work that was backed by previous grants.
