There’s no such thing as ‘just’ a municipal election
While Tuesday my not have had the pomp leading up to a federal election year, Tuesday’s municipal election voting is every bit as important.
The people chosen to lead our county, municipalities and school districts will determine the fates of our communities and make decisions that will have consequences for years to come.
This year’s municipal election also features a number of statewide judicial retention votes, including one each for judges of the statewide appellate Superior and Commonwealth courts, and three for Justice of the state Supreme Court.
Commonwealth Court oversees mostly civil issues brought by or against the state government and hears appeals involving state and local governments. Superior Court handles appeals of decisions of the county courts of common pleas in criminal, civil and family law cases.
If retained, the five judges will be tasked with weighing cases that profoundly shape the nature of our commonwealth and can set legal precedents that guide future judges’ decisions long after they’re gone.
We encourage anyone who has not already voted by mail to head to the polls Tuesday and exercise their most important right in a democracy by casting their vote for those who will shape their communities in the years to come. There’s a lot at stake, even if it’s “just” a municipal election.
