PIAA playoffs: Seneca Valley boys, girls soccer sweeps McDowell; Mars volleyball headed to quarterfinals
Maddie Marcotte continued her white-hot playoff run with yet another goal and Cassie Leonard provided the game-winner to lead Seneca Valley girls soccer to a 2-1 win over District 10 champion McDowell in Tuesday’s PIAA Class 4A first round.
The Raiders (13-4-2) will play Central Bucks East in the state quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be announced Wednesday.
Marcotte’s goal came with 24:22 left in the first half after the Trojans scored less than a minute into the game. Leonard scored off a SV corner kick with less than 24 minutes left in the game.
An overtime goal by Jacob Prex lifted Seneca Valley to a 2-1 victory over District 10 champion McDowell in Tuesday’s PIAA Class 4A first round.
Michael Pokrzywinski had scored for SV (18-3) in the first half before the host Trojans scored the equalizer in the 57th minute.
The Raiders will square off against Warwick in a quarterfinal Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
Mars opened the PIAA Class 3A tournament with a 3-0 sweep over District 10 champion and previously unbeaten Warren.
The Planets, the WPIAL’s third seed that last year made the state final for the first time, won by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-23. They improved to 18-5 this season and will play Beaver in Saturday’s state quarterfinals at a site and time to be announced Wednesday.
Gabi Weidemann dished out 34 assists and had 10 digs for a double-double, and added four aces and four kills in a dominant performance. Rylee Wooldridge also had a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs; Cecilia Christy recorded nine kills and three blocks; and Alaina Graham had 10 digs.
