Coroner: Elderly couple dies in Saturday crash in Buffalo Township

Two Butler residents over age 70 died, and another woman was injured in a Saturday, Nov. 1, three-vehicle crash on South Pike Road in Buffalo Township.

Bonnie Grove, 78, was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m. at the crash scene, and Douglas Frosch, 72, died at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital shortly after being taken there by medical helicopter, according to Butler County Chief Deputy Coroner John Hanovich.

The two killed in the crash were a couple, Hanovich said. Both were wearing seatbelts.

Buffalo Township police were dispatched at 2:48 p.m. and arrived at 2:52 p.m., according to Buffalo Township police chief Tim Derringer.

Derringer said the crash occurred when two women traveling south in a Honda CRV were stopped on South Pike Road waiting to turn left onto Younkins Road. He said a woman driving a Kia Sorento behind the CRV failed to stop and veered into the northbound lane, striking the oncoming Lincoln Town Car with Grove and Frosch.

The woman driving the Sorento was transported to Allegheny General Hospital. The two women in the Honda CRV were uninjured.

South Pike Road (Route 356) was closed to traffic between Parker and Bear Creek roads, according to Butler County Emergency Services dispatch. The road reopened shortly after 10 p.m.

Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department and Sarver Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the crash.
