Congratulations on milestone anniversary for Harrisville Community Band
On Friday, a Butler County institution marked a milestone birthday.
The Harrisville Community Band held its 60th anniversary concert on Friday, Oct. 31, the same date as its first performance back in 1965.
There are even two original members left: Saxophone player Karen McKnight and clarinet player Judy Critchlow.
McKnight remembered the band being formed — she was still in high school, and playing saxophone. The community band gave her and others the chance to keep performing.
“They started the band to give people with an intent to play music after high school or college the ability to play in the band,” McKnight said. “If you have a horn, it’s not like a piano. With a subtle instrument, you need to have others behind you or play in a group.”
The director, Jim Jasowak, has had a similar experience. He’s a retired music educator, but wasn’t ready to give up leading an ensemble.
And the band continues to be strong, with dozens of members, many of whom have participated for decades.
Groups like the Harrisville Community Band used to be far more common, both in Butler County and around the entire U.S. Many of them no longer play, so it’s gratifying to see 40 people continue a long musical tradition in Harrisville.
We wish the band another 60 years of harmony.
