Butler man who led police on multicounty chase charged in second burglary
A Butler man who reportedly burglarized a Fairview Township residence before leading authorities on a multicounty chase has been charged in a separate burglary that occurred five days prior, along with a Bruin woman.
Ronald Raymond Piper, 46, was charged Monday, Nov. 3, with one felony count each of theft and receiving stolen property, and misdemeanor theft following an Oct. 15 incident in Clay Township.
Tiffiny Lynn Martin, 42, also was charged Monday with one felony count each of receiving stolen property and criminal aid in the incident.
Police said they were dispatched to a Kildoo Road residence for multiple items reported stolen, including a 1979 Suzuki dirt bike, a 1980 Yamaha dirt bike and other vehicles, car parts and scrap metal. The items were loaded into a Honda Odyssey and taken to a scrap metal yard.
Police spoke with a man at the residence who said he also had items stolen from a different property off Claytonia Road. The items were loaded into a van and taken to the same scrapyard, police said.
The man then received a call from the scrapyard owner asking if he wanted to buy the property the scrapyard had just purchased from Piper, police said. The man recognized the property, which included the items stolen from the Kildoo Road residence.
Martin was charged for allegedly driving the vehicle Piper used to transport the scrap metal. Police said Piper asked Martin to come because he didn’t have a driver’s license. Police said she did not know how Piper got the items.
Five days later, on Oct. 20, Piper was accused of being involved in a burglary in Fairview Township. The items stolen included a drill and citizens band radios. The burglary also involved a Honda Odyssey van, which Piper would crash in Armstrong County after leading police on a chase.
Police later encountered a Honda Odyssey van and attempted to make a traffic stop but failed. The van was then seen traveling west on Route 68 with the three occupants. When it traveled east again, there was only one occupant in the vehicle, police said. Another pursuit was initiated on Route 268 going into Armstrong County. State police from Kittanning deployed spike stripes, but they did not stop the van. The van then swerved off the road and almost struck a trooper who was deploying more spike stripes, police said.
The operator then exited the van and fled on foot but was not found at that time.
At 5 a.m. the following day, state police received a report of a stolen vehicle near where the pursuit ended. The stolen vehicle was recovered on Route 422 near Swartzlander Lane in Clearfield Township, Butler County. Police said they believe Piper stole the vehicle after crashing the van.
In addition to the Nov. 3 charges, Piper is facing charges of felony burglary and misdemeanor theft in Butler County, and three felony counts of aggravated assault, felony fleeing police and misdemeanor evading arrest, reckless endangerment and drug paraphernalia possession in Armstrong County.
He and Martin’s preliminary hearings for the Nov. 3 charges have not yet been scheduled.
