PITTSBURGH — Defending its WPIAL boys soccer title from a year ago meant Fox Chapel would have to defeat a very strong Seneca Valley team for the third time this season.

As expected, the Raiders made things very difficult on their Section 3-4A foes.

Not until Sean Regan’s boot sealed a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks were the Foxes able to celebrate back-to-back titles Friday at Highmark Stadium after both teams were held scoreless through regulation and two overtimes.

Fox Chapel scored regular-season wins of 2-1 in overtime and 3-2 against SV, whose three losses this year have come at the hands of the Foxes (16-2).

“Our games with Seneca Valley are always fast and physical,” Fox Chapel coach Erik Ingram said. “I believe these were the two best teams in the WPIAL.”

The Raiders (17-3) remained in contention during penalty kicks thanks to successful attempts from Chase Lively and Zach White, but Foxes senior goalie Brady Matthews made clutch saves on shots from Owen Eastgate and Jacob Prex.

Matthews stopped eight shots prior to penalty kicks.

“He’s the only goalie I know who loves penalty kicks,” Ingram said. “He’s very aggressive and athletic.”

Also scoring in the penalty round for the Foxes were Calyx Kimbrough, Rocco Didomenico and Nick Squeglia.

SV goalie Chase Good had stopped 11 shots in 110 minutes of regulation and overtime.

“He kept us in the game,” SV coach George Williams said. “In that first half, wow. Fox Chapel could have been up by multiple goals.

“I thought both teams were tight at the start. You could see the players were a bit tentative, the nerves.”

Williams also credited defenders Fynn O’Donnell, Luke West and Lively for keeping the Foxes off the scoreboard.

“I know any team hates to lose on penalty kicks, but there was 110 minutes of great soccer before that,” Ingram said.

SV will open the state playoffs Tuesday against the winner of Districts 6 or 10. The PIAA will announce brackets, sites and times Sunday.

“We could see these guys again shortly,” Williams said. Fox Chapel and the Raiders could face off in the semifinals Nov. 11 if both win two state tournament games.
