Police: Evans City woman had mushrooms in apartment with 1-year-old

An Evans City woman was charged after police said they found psilocybin mushrooms and mushroom-growing supplies while a 1-year-old boy was in the residence upon a welfare check of her apartment.

Sierrah Mackenzie Altenburg, 21, of Evans City, was charged on Friday, Oct. 31, with one felony count each of child endangerment and possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, three misdemeanor counts of drug paraphernalia possession and two misdemeanor counts of controlled substance possession following an Oct. 29 incident.

Police said they responded to a residence on Evans City’s Main Street for a welfare check. Police had previous knowledge of a 1-year-old boy inside.

After making several announcements and getting no response, police forced entry into the apartment and found a man sleeping on the couch and Altenburg in the bedroom lying face down beside the boy.

While inside the apartment, police viewed glass pipes with dark residue and burned tinfoil pieces in the kitchen. According to police, they also found supplies that can be used for growing mushrooms.

Altenburg claimed the supplies belonged to a former resident who moved out a month ago.

Police later executed a search warrant on the apartment and found mushrooms, various totes containing a soil-like substance with a layer of mold over them, about 40 Petri dishes containing seeds and spores and glass Mason jars with white and mold-colored bulbs.

Police also found two glass pipes with dark residue and more tinfoil with burn marks.

Altenburg’s preliminary hearing had not yet been scheduled as of Friday.
