Roundup: North Catholic football cruises into WPIAL quarterfinals; girls tennis doubles pair falls in states
North Catholic football never really let Burrell threaten seriously.
Sure, Bucs running back Antonio Perkins had 194 yards and two scores of 97 and 73 yards at halftime, but the Trojans were well on their way to a 56-21 blowout win in a WPIAL Class 3A first round playoff game.
The No. 5 Trojans (8-3) took a 56-14 lead at halftime thanks to a big passing night. Joe Felitsky found Will Waskiewicz from about 9 yards out on the opening drive, then Nate Swisher from 6 yards out. Logan Schade ran in from 6 yards to make it 21-7, and the rout was on from there.
Ryker Kennedy caught a touchdown, Anthony Green took one in from 2 yards out, and Preston Simko caught a screen pass and found nothing but daylight for a 21-yard touchdown to make it 42-7.
Felitsky hit Tommy Arth for a 48-yard strike and a 3-yard toss before halftime.
North will visit No. 4 Elizabeth Forward, which had a bye, in next week’s quarterfinals.
North Catholic’s Evelyn Marche and Macaria Stall were knocked out of the PIAA Class 2A Girls Tennis Doubles Tournament in the first round Friday at Hershey Racquet Club, ending a season that saw them reach the WPIAL final.
Scranton Prep’s Lily Lengyel and Emma Cuck, the District 2 champions, swept the Trojanettes sophomores 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals, which were played Friday evening.
