The Giant Eagle Foundation recently announced it will commit $1 million to support several food bank partners across its five-state operating area at a time when food banks are facing heightened need.

According to a release by the foundation, Giant Eagle has also supported food banks through weekly food donations and its register donations campaigns. The company said it donates the equivalent of 20 million meals annually.

Giant Eagle is in close contact with food bank partners to explore additional ways it can offer support, the release said.

As part of these efforts, the company is currently running a register donation campaign at more than 200 Giant Eagle and Market District supermarkets through Dec. 24. Customers can make donations at checkout and can choose to donate a specific dollar amount or round their final grocery bill up to the nearest dollar. Every dollar raised through the campaign will directly support the food bank serving the local community where the donation is made, the company said.
