Use caution as Halloween events unfold
It’s that time of year. The pumpkins are carved, the decorations are out and all the little ghouls and gremlins are primed to head out in search of that most coveted prize: free candy. But it’s also time to be careful and ensure the scares remain in the name of good fun.
While Halloween festivities have already begun in many places, it’s never too late to remember to be safe.
According to the American Red Cross, some tips for staying safe include:
– Use face makeup rather than mask to maximize children’s sight radius
– Have children carry a flashlight to see where they’re going
– Ensure children are dressed in bright colors or have reflective tape on their costumes so they can be seen
– Use flame-resistant costumes
– Ensure parents know where older children are going and an adult accompanies younger children
– Be cautious around animals when visiting strangers’ homes
– Walk, don’t run
– Only visit homes that have a porch light on to indicate trick or treaters are welcome
– Don’t walk in the street. Stay on sidewalks when possible and off the road when not
– Make sure an adults checks all treats before children consume them
As for adults, simple things like keeping our eyes open knowing children are out walking, ensuring our porches are well lit if we intend to give out treats, making sure animals are restrained and ensuring walkways and stairs are unobstructed and easily accessed can make a big difference in helping everyone has a fun and safe holiday.
