College sports roundup: No. 4 BC3 volleyball to face Sandhills with chance to qualify for NJCAA tournament

Butler County Community College women’s volleyball won the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference and NJCAA Region 20 Tournament dual championships Saturday.

The No. 4-ranked Pioneers swept Pennsylvania Highlands Community College 3-0 (25-8, 25-2, 25-7) to improve to 21-0 and qualify once again for the NJCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic District Championship. They will host No. 2 Sandhills Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the winner automatically qualifying for the DIII national championships in Iowa from Nov. 11-13.

BC3 has won 10 straight WPCC and seven straight Region 20 titles. It is trying to reach the national championships for the fifth time.

The Pioneers’ Marissa Metzka tied her season high with 10 kills, and Josie Russo and Dakota Weldon had nine apiece. Molly Bissell had a career-high eight aces, and Anora Robare tied her career high with five.

Weekly honors

Knoch grad Keagan Fraser, a senior Grove City College safety, was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week after intercepting two passes in Saturday’s 14-7 win over Westminster. He had five tackles.

SRU junior goalkeeper Leah Allman had eight saves in two shutouts as The Rock went 2-0 against IUP and Pitt-Johnstown last week.
