Republicans to blame for shutdown

U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly’s recent article in the Butler Eagle (“A bipartisan vote needed to fund the budget,” Oct. 21, Page 4) omits details and implies powers that Senate Republicans no longer have.

The reasons the Senate Democrats are standing firm against signing the continuing resolution, as he calls it, are twofold, they want to reverse the Medicaid cuts and extend the government subsidies for 20 million American citizens that are insured under the Affordable Care Act.

Mr. Kelly states that the agreement would take care of business until Nov. 21, and “while lawmakers work to reach an agreement on our annual long-term budget.” This implies that the Republicans actually have the power to make any decisions. The only person that can make that decision is President Donald Trump, and he has made perfectly clear that he will not negotiate. That he doesn’t care about American citizens that will no longer be able to afford health insurance or the Americans that will lose Medicaid benefits.

The shutdown of the government is on Trump and all the Republicans that have through their votes, their verbal support or their silence, have allowed him to do the unconstitutional, illegal and immoral things he has done.

As a postscript, if you still believe he cares or respects the citizens of this country, his response to the “No Kings” rallies show you what he really thinks.
