High school sports roundup: Moniteau pair, Slippery Rock’s Springirth headed to cross country states
Two Moniteau runners and one from Slippery Rock qualified for the PIAA Cross Country Championships through their respective district meets Saturday.
Moniteau junior Alexis Kirschner qualified by placing eighth in the District 9 2A girls meet at Ridgway. Her time was 22 minutes, 5.3 seconds. The Warriors placed fifth in the team standings. On the boys side, Moniteau junior Peyton Beck placed 11th with a time of 17:34.2 to move on. The Warrior boys were eighth in the team standings.
Cranberry’s Beatrice Kolesar won the 2A girls meet in 19:32. Jackson Nicewonger of North Clarion won the boys meet in 16:47.1. Central Clarion won the boys and girls team titles.
Slippery Rock freshman Lydia Springirth placed 15th with a time of 19:55 in the District 10 2A girls meet to qualify for the PIAA competition. The District 10 meet took place in Titusville.
The Rocket girls placed fifth as a team. Cathedral Prep won the girls team title and the Ramblers’ Fina Bannister won the meet with a time of 18:15.
Hunter Doerflinger was Slippery Rock’s top male finisher, placing 42nd in 17:27. Blake Glass of Fort LeBoeuf won the boys meet in 15:38. Grove City won the boys team title.
North Catholic’s season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to unbeaten Scranton Prep (20-0) in the PIAA 2A semifinal round Saturday at the Hershey Racquet Club.
The Trojanettes’ (14-4) lone victory in the match was at No. 2 doubles, where sophomore Kaitlyn Abel and junior Claire Elliott defeated Grace James and Donatella DeNaples, 6-2, 6-2.
No. 1 doubles player Ava Conley was the lone senior in North Catholic’s lineup. She teamed with junior Leah Kernan. Sophomores Evelyn Marche and Macaria Stall, along with freshman Anna Ravotti, were singles players or the Trojanettes.
North Catholic defeated once-beaten Lancaster Catholic and previously unbeaten Bedford to reach the semifinals.
No. 6 North Catholic advanced to the WPIAL Class 4A semifinals with a win over No. 3 Upper St. Clair. No further details were found for the Trojanettes’ victory. They’ll advance to face off with No. 2 Peters Township on Wednesday at a time and location to be determined.
Pine Richland 3, Seneca Valley 0 — The No. 4 Raiders’ season ended with a WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal defeat against the No. 5 Rams. No further details were found.
