New Castle Playhouse staging play based on cult classic film

The most polluted town in New Jersey is coming to the Annex in New Castle.

Based on Lloyd Kaufman’s cult classic film, “The Toxic Avenger” is an award-winning rock musical. The New Castle Playhouse will stage the musical with shows from Friday, Oct. 24 to Nov. 2.

When Melvin Ferd III is tossed into a vat of toxic waste, he reemerges as “Toxie” — a mutant superhero with superhuman strength and a heart as big as Newark. It’s a toxic love story with an environmental twist, packed with comedy and a rock score, according to a news release from New Castle Playhouse.

“The Toxic Avenger” shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, as well as Oct. 30, 31 and Nov. 1; and at 2 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 2 at the Annex Theatre, 212 E. Long Ave., New Castle. For tickets or more information, visit newcastleplayhouse.org.

The show contains adult language and some adult content.
