KARNS CITY — Whatever the chances were in August of Karns City girls soccer claiming another District 9 title, they have improved with the return of two star players from injury.

Senior defender Trinity McFarland took the field in late September, and sophomore forward Katelyn VanDyke, who emerged as one of the team’s top goal scorers last year, played her third game of the season Thursday in a Class 1A district semifinal against Brookville at Diehl Stadium.

VanDyke scored the second of KC’s goals in a 3-0 victory.

“I wanted to get back to playing, it was just a question of when,” said Van Dyke, who tore the ACL in her right knee while playing basketball last winter. “I’d been out for so long, getting back into it has been a little rough, but I’m getting there.”

The Gremlins will face Elk County Catholic, a 2-1 winner in overtime against Brockway in the other semifinal, for the district crown at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Brookville Stadium.

Gremlins coach Tracy Dailey said having VanDyke in the lineup “gives us another scoring threat. She’s a dynamic player at the top of our formation.

“And Trinity is a stabilizing force on defense. She and Ava Kamenski work really well together.”

The Gremlins controlled play for much of the night against Brookville, but led just 1-0 before Van Dyke found the net in the 64th minute. Junior forward Phoebe Brandon, who scored the first goal in the first half, added a third nearly five minutes later.

Brookville goalie Izzy Schrecengost helped keep the game close until KC iced it in the final 17 minutes. She tallied 17 saves.

At the other end of the field, the Gremlins allowed precious few chances to the Raiders (13-7), which feature two players with a combined 34 goals scored this season in Ally Wilson and Kaida Yoder.

“We allowed just one shot to (Wilson) and had Layla Colsey on (Yoder),” Dailey said. “We’re totally fine with leaving her to handle that because Layla is very good.

“We knew Brookville likes to play a lot of long balls in, and we focused on limiting that.”

Sophomore goalie Giada Bonetto needed to make just two saves for the Gremlins (17-3).

“Karns City is a very strong team,” Brookville coach Shawn Castellan said. “It was good competition and we need that.”

KC is in search of its fifth straight district championship and 27th in 31 seasons.
