Elderly woman dies in Wednesday fire in Mercer County
A 73-year-old woman died in a Wednesday morning, Oct. 22, residential structure fire in Mercer County.
Eleanor (Kitt) Samuels was pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m. after crews found her while fighting the house fire on Beechwood Avenue in Farrell, according to Mercer County coroner John A. Libonati.
The Shenango Township Volunteer Fire Department in Mercer County responded around 8:30 a.m. as part of a second-alarm response, according to a Facebook post from Shenango Township Fire Chief Justin Barnes.
He said fire crews began an immediate interior attack but could not save the woman. They did rescue a dog, which was placed with the Shenango Valley Animal Shelter.
The fire took about an hour to get under control, Barnes said.
Libonati said the cause and manner of death are pending a further forensic evaluation, but no foul play is suspected.
The City of Farrell Fire Department and Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshall are investigating the cause of the fire.
