High school sports roundup: North Catholic pair misses podium at PIAA golf championships
North Catholic’s Riley Kontul shot a 13-over 157 over two rounds at the PIAA Class 2A Girls Golf Championships, good enough to tie for 10th-place at the event, which was held at Penn State Golf Courses on Monday and Tuesday.
St. Joseph’s Madison Koshko finished tops with a 136, 8-under par.
On the 2A boys’ side, North Catholic’s Christopher Faber (6-over 150) placed tied for 12th, Union A/C Valley’s Joe Rapp (8-over) tied for 20th and Freeport’s Ethan Crooks (11-over) tied for 29th.
Scranton Prep’s Cole Powell (7-under) earned the state title.
North Catholic, the WPIAL Class 2A runner-up, swept District 5 champion Bedford 5-0 in Tuesday’s PIAA Team Tennis Championships first-round match at Summit Tennis & Athletic Club, in Altoona.
The Trojans advance Friday’s quarterfinals at Hershey Racquet Club. They will face D3 champ Lancaster Catholic, which swept Loyalsock 5-0 in another first-round match, at 2:30 p.m. The state semifinals and final are Saturday at HRC.
Sam Caton, Logan Berry, Ryan Strother and Wade Freehling scored goals for Slippery Rock in a 4-2 win over Hickory in the District 10 Class 3A quarterfinals.
No. 10 Union/A-C Valley fell to No. 7 Coudersport 3-1 in a District 9 Class 1A first-round playoff matchup. Malia Page had 10 kills, while Maddy Dehart added four kills and three blocks.
