High school sports roundup: A-C Valley Union’s Joe Rapp, two North Catholic golfers in PIAA golf medal hunts
Joe Rapp is in contention for a medal through Round 1 of the PIAA Class 2A Boys Golf Individual Championships.
The A-C Valley/Union junior shot a 3-over 75 Monday on Penn State Golf Courses’ White Course, just one stroke off the top eight that make the podium.
Rapp, who said after winning the District 9 championship his goal is to finish Top 10 in states, shot an even par on the front-nine, including birdies on the par-5 third and sixth holes. A double-bogey on 13 dulled an otherwise strong first round, which included a third birdie on 15.
He’s not the only local golfer in contention for a medal — North Catholic’s Christopher Faber is tied for 11th as well at 3-over. Faber birdied two par-5s, Nos. 3 and 10, and the par-4 11th. He also had a double-bogey on the back-nine, at No. 16.
Trojans teammate Eric Proie is 6-over through one round, tied for 28th after he birdied the third hole.
Freeport’s Ethan Crooks is tied for 33rd after shooting 7-over.
Scranton Prep’s Cole Powell leads the 2A boys field at 4-under.
And North Catholic girls golfer Riley Kontul is within striking distance of a Class 2A girls medal after a Day 1 round of 8-over 80. She’s tied for 12th and is two shots off the podium.
St. Joseph’s Madison Koshko, Shady Side Academy’s Alyssa Zhang and West Middlesex’s Kate Sowers lead the 2A girls field at 4-under.
Leading the boys 3A field is Daniel Boone’s Chase Yenser (4-under), and Elizabeth Forward’s Mya Morgan is atop the girls 3A field at 3-under.
The final round will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The team championships will be held Wednesday.
No. 3 North Catholic advanced easily in the WPIAL Class 2A tournament with Monday’s 7-1 win over 14th-seed Yough in the first round.
Arthur Mendonca and Justin Garvey each scored twice, with Garvey tallying a pair of assists. Brody Kennedy, Angelo Amelio and Jackson Schlegel also scored; Kennedy added an assist.
The Trojans will face No. 6 Deer Lakes, which beat No. 11 Central Valley 5-1 in another first-round game Monday, in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
