College sports roundup: Butler grad, Grove City standout Tori Stevenson records hat trick
Butler grad Tori Stevenson recorded the second hat trick of her career Saturday in Grove City women’s soccer’s 6-0 win at Chatham.
Stevenson, who now has 11 goals this year, scored in the 29th, 52nd and 57th minute for the Wolverines (8-4-2, 7-0-1 PAC), who have won six straight.
The performance earned Stevenson the PAC Offensive Player of the Week. She scored a goal in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Franciscan and is tied for third in the conference in goals.
Slippery Rock football’s Kanye Thompson was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week after he had five tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and two pass breakups in Saturday’s win over IUP, one of the best passing teams in the nation.
Seneca Valley graduate and SRU women’s soccer senior defender Sydney Smith was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week after she recorded the assist in The Rock’s go-ahead goal in a 3-1 win over Edinboro.
Westminster men’s soccer senior goalie Noah Wolford, a Butler grad, was named the PAC Goalkeeper of the Week after recording eight saves in two regulation shutouts as Westminster went 1-0-1 a week ago.
Abby Paterline, Bailey McGee and Allie Burns scored in SRU’s 3-1 win over Edinboro. The Rock trailed 1-0 after a second-minute goal, but rallied for their fourth straight victory to improve to 8-3-0 (8-1-0 PSAC West)
Kaden Reynolds scored two goals, giving him eight on the year, in The Rock’s 2-0 shutout at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday. SRU is 6-5-1 (3-2-0 PSAC) after its third straight win.
Slippery Rock’s Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi won their final consolation match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Cup on Saturday, 6-2, 6-4 over Central Oklahoma University’s Ayaka Koga and Pete Komada.
Kempton and Kivi are 9-6 this fall. SRU resumes action in the spring.
Slippery Rock was swept Saturday by Pitt-Johnstown 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-21) to fall to 9-11 (2-5 PSAC). Lauren VonderHaar led SRU with eight kills and three blocks.
Butler County Community College can go 20-0 this regular season after a 3-0 sweep last week of Cuyahoga Community College. Head coach Rob Snyder is now three wins away from 500 with a 497-172 record over more than 27 seasons. The Pioneers wrap up the regular season against the Community College of Allegheny County at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Undefeated Kutztown blanked Slippery Rock 7-0 Saturday, dropping The Rock to 5-8 (1-5 PSAC).
