College sports roundup: SRU tennis duo knocked to ITA consolations; women’s lacrosse coach earns DII award
The doubles pair of Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi lost their opening-round match 6-4, 6-4 to West Florida’s Carlota Verdu and Sandra Recuenco in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Cup doubles tournament Thursday.
Kempton and Kivi took 3-0 leads in each set but could not hold on. They now play in consolation matches Friday and Saturday at Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. Friday’s opponents will be Midwestern State’s Emilia Gyorgy and Camila Garcia Morales.
SRU women’s lacrosse assistant coach Jordan Anderson was named the NCAA Division II Outstanding Assistant Coach on Thursday by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.
The fourth-year Rock assistant helped SRU to an 18-3 record (10-0 PSAC West). She was recognized for her “outstanding dedication, hard work and sportsmanship,” according to Slippery Rock’s news release. The awards ceremony is in November in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Butler grad Noah Wolford, a Westminster senior goalie, recorded five saves in the Titan’s 1-0 win over Allegheny on Wednesday.
Kaden Reynolds scored twice in the second period, in the 70th and 81st minutes, to lead Slippery Rock to a 2-0 win Wednesday over Daemen. The nonconference victory gets SRU back to .500 at 5-5-1.
Slippery Rock won its first PSAC game this season, beating Frostburg State 1-0 Wednesday on Coral Piramo’s third-quarter goal. SRU is now 5-7 (1-4).
