High school sports roundup: North girls tennis finishes runner-up in WPIAL, heads to states
North Catholic girls tennis fell short of defending its WPIAL Class 2A team championship, dropping a 3-2 decision to Quaker Valley in the final at Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday.
North’s victories came via straight sets from Macaria Stall and Anna Ravotti at No. 2 and 3 Singles, respectively.
With the match tied 2-2, the Trojanettes’ doubles team of Ava Conley and Leah Kernan fell to the Quakers in three sets — 6-4, 1-6, 3-6.
Also competing for North were Evelyn Marche in singles play, Claire Elliott and Kaitlyn Abel in doubles action.
The Trojanettes, who defeated the Quakers for last year’s district crown, will open the state playoffs Tuesday against an opponent and at a site to be determined.
Julia Siket and Mackenzie Powell scored for Mars, which closed the regular season with a 2-0 shutout of Ringgold. The playoff-bound Planets improved to 13-3-1 overall.
Freeport 7, Shaler 1 — The Yellowjackets (15-1) won their 14th straight as Elena Jenkins and Natalia Urik scored two goals apiece.
CeCe Schlegel added two assists in the victory.
Chase Lively, Fynn O’Donnell, Bryson Valentovish and Victor Santos all found the net as Seneca Valley breezed past Central Catholic 4-1.
The Raiders will enter the postseason with a record of 15-2.
