High school sports roundup: North Catholic girls tennis advances to WPIAL team final
North Catholic girls tennis advanced to Wednesday’s WPIAL Class 2A team final with a 3-2 semifinal win Monday over Winchester Thurston.
The match was played at Quaker Valley High School, and the Trojanettes received victories at second and third singles from Macaria Stall and Anna Ravotti, respectively.
North also saw its No. 2 doubles tandem of Kaitlyn Abel and Claire Elliott top the Bears.
The second-seeded Trojanettes will face either top seed Quaker Valley or Oakland Catholic for the district crown at noon Wednesday at Washington & Jefferson College’s Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center.
Miley Gratton and Jade Breese both scored twice in Mars’ 9-0 win over Obama Academy at Cupples Stadium.
Addison Orehowsky, Reese Vuckovich, Mackenzie Powell, Maeve O’Leary and Mikayla Ostermann also scored for the Planets (12-3-1), who are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games.
Karns City 8, North Clarion 1 — Hanna Dailey starred for the Gremlins, scoring three times and adding three assists in this win against the Wolves.
Layla Colsey and Bree O’Donnell both scored twice and Bella Shields found the net once. Phoebe Brandon contributed three assists and Sophie Bonetto one.
Colton Christie scored off a free kick from Joshua Peters in Karns City’s 2-1 loss to North Clarion.
Madison Romanovich had a team-high seven kills, and Adi Novad added five kills and seven digs in Slippery Rock’s 3-0 win at Jamestown. The Rockets (15-2) won by set scores of 25-5, 25-20, 25-19.
A-C Valley 3, Cranberry 0 — Maddy Dehart powered the Falcons to a 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 win with seven kills and four blocks. Nichole Wingard had eight digs, seven assists and four aces.
North Clarion 3, Union 0 — Lilly Hayden had 22 digs in the Damsels’ 25-19, 25-8, 25-17 loss. Brooke Hileman led the offense with five kills and four digs.
