High school sports roundup: Slippery Rock girls finish 2nd at Mercer County XC championships
Slippery Rock girls cross country took second Saturday at the Mercer County championships at Buhl Park, Sharon.
Freshman Lydia Springirth led the Rockets with a sixth-place finish in 20:14. Three others finished in the top 11: Leah Perez (eighth, 20:32), Kasey Yeager (10th, 20:40) and Lylah Robare (11th, 20:41).
Slippery Rock finished with 58 points, just two behind Mercer.
The boys finished seventh with 187 points — Grove City won with 35 — as Hunter Doerflinger (18:06) and Zachary Geisner (18:09) finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
Evan Ordy scored two goals in Butler’s 3-1 win over Knoch. Jude Perhacs had a goal and assist.
Slippery Rock 2, Ambridge 1 — Wade Freehling and Zach Lasko scored second-half goals off assists by Sam Caton and Cody Freehling.
Butler 3, Knoch 2 — Cecelia Wolford scored twice, and Callie McKindley tallied the other for the Tornado.
