Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Cunningham

Cunningham

Elizabeth “Betty” Cunningham, 96, of Butler, passed away peacefully at her home in Butler, on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025.

Born on March 15, 1929, on Long Island, N.Y., Betty was the daughter of immigrants, Bronislaw and Mary Abersmith. She often spoke fondly of her childhood adventures on Long Island — digging for clams with her toes, sledding alongside her pet rooster and spending joyful days with her best friend, Joanie.

During World War II, Betty met her future husband, Howard Lyman Cunningham, a medic stationed with her brother, Albert. Their connection was instant, and after the war, the couple married and made their home in Butler. Howard began work with the Pullman Railroad while Betty devoted herself to raising their two children, Kathy and Kevin.

Betty had a love for nature and took great pride in her small but vibrant front yard garden. A devoted birdwatcher, she especially delighted in sightings of cardinals and hawks. She had a special bond with animals, particularly cats, who were constant companions throughout her life.

A lifelong learner and avid reader, Betty held a special fascination with world history — especially ancient Egypt — and could often be found with a book in hand and curiosity in her heart. Her faith was a steady pillar in her life, and she was a devoted parishioner of St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church.

Betty is survived by her loving son, Kevin (Marcia) Cunningham; and her beloved grandchildren, Joseph (Jocelyn) Stafura, Larissa (Christopher) Haynes-Cunningham, Mikaela (Dana) Burick and Morgan Cunningham. She is also remembered with love by her great-grandchildren, Emmanuel Haynes-Cunningham and Addison Burick.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bronislaw and Mary Abersmith; brothers, Albert and Victor Abersmith; beloved husband, Howard; daughter, Kathy; and grandchildren, Emily Stafura and Daniel Stafura.

Betty’s warmth, curiosity and kindness will be missed by all who knew her.
