Police: Man steals car, runs out of gas, throws keys off bridge

A Chicora man reportedly stole a vehicle that was low on gas and left the vehicle in the center of the road before throwing the keys over a bridge, police said.

Jacob Scott Ellenberger, 30, was charged Thursday, Oct. 9, with felony theft and misdemeanor vehicle theft following an Oct. 8 incident in Concord Township.

Police said they were dispatched to the intersection of West Slippery Rock and Buena Vista roads for reports of an abandoned vehicle in the road.

Police said while responding to the call, the vehicle’s owner called police and reported it stolen. The owner said the vehicle’s gas tank was almost empty, and she saw a man by her mailbox when going inside her residence.

Police were also alerted to multiple Facebook posts about an individual walking down Cherry Road in Fairview Township, about a mile from the abandoned vehicle.

Police said Ellenberger admitted to taking the vehicle and said the vehicle suddenly stopped, so he threw the keys over a “rainbow bridge” and walked the rest of the way home.

Ellenberger is being held in Butler County Prison on a $75,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 21 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
