It’s not exactly how Butler football wanted to break its long drought, but it’s official nonetheless.

Athletic director Bill Mylan said Wednesday, Oct. 8, he was informed earlier in the day by Westinghouse’s athletic department the Bulldogs are forfeiting Week 5 contest after reporting they had used an ineligible player in the game Sept. 19.

Westinghouse originally won the contest 40-14. Butler fell to 3-2 at the time. Now the record will show a 2-0 Golden Tornado win by forfeit, giving them a sixth win this season.

It’s the first time they can finish the regular season with a winning record since 1997.

“Obviously, we don’t want to collect a win in that manner, but it obviously does put us in a position now to have a winning season no matter what happens the next three games,” Mylan said, adding that after years of challenges rebuilding the program, including leaving the WPIAL for District 10 and later an independent schedule, “I can’t even put it into words, I’m just exciting for the kids and the program.”

Mylan said he was told the eligibility issue involved the “transfer period” but did not have more information.

Butler is now 6-1 heading into Friday’s road game, just the second of the season, against Taylor Allderdice.

The Tornado finished 4-6 last year.
