Tips to know for Fire Prevention Week

Pennsylvania is leading the nation in home fire fatalities. More than 100 people have been killed in house fires this year. That’s why the American Red Cross is highlighting Fire Prevention Week, which began Sunday, Oct. 5.

From Sunday to Saturday, the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania is reminding everyone to be aware of the dangers of home fires.

“Home fires can occur at any time,” said Jorge Martinez, CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania, in a news release. “The sooner an alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get out. This is critical because fire experts say you may have less than two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late.”

Tips include:

  • know two ways to escape from each room;
  • get low to avoid smoke;
  • have a set meeting spot outside and away from your house;
  • stay outside and don’t run back in;
  • talk about fire safety with your children;
  • have smoke alarms on each floor of your house;
  • and test alarms and make sure they aren’t outdated.
