High school sports roundup: Freeport, North Catholic boys golf advance to WPIAL Class 2A final

Freeport and North Catholic boys golf finished within a stroke of each other and clinched two of the six spots in Thursday’s WPIAL Class 2A Team Championship final.

It is the first time the Yellowjackets, who shot a 397, have qualified for the final since 2015, according to head coach Joe Sprumont.

North Catholic finished third in the semifinal bracket with 398, and Elizabeth Forward won the semi with 387 at Champion Lakes Golf Club.

Ethan Crooks carded a 1-over 72 to lead Freeport. Aiden Bauman and Carson Kane tied with rounds of 79.

The final will be held at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course, with the first groupings teeing off at 10 a.m. Avonworth, Beaver and Shady Side Academy advanced out of the other semifinal.

North’s Ben Kandravy had the low round of the day, shooting 3-under 68 to beat Deer Lakes’ Christian Cappetta by a stroke. Crooks finished third individually.

Girls tennis

The first day of the WPIAL Class 2A Girls Tennis Team Tournament has been moved back one day due to anticipated rain Tuesday.

The first round will now be held Wednesday, with quarterfinals Thursday, semifinals Monday and the final and third-place match Oct. 15.

North Catholic is the No. 2 seed and will face No. 15 Blackhawk in the first round at Cranberry Township Park.

Girls soccer

Phoebe Brandon scored off an assist from Sophia Bonetto in overtime to lift Karns City to a 2-1 victory against Mercer.

Hanna Dailey scored earlier in the game, with Lexi Neff assisting for the Gremlins.

Allderdice 3, Butler 2 — Lucia Leyland and Cecelia Wolford scored in the Tornado’s loss, as they fell to 6-7-1.

Mars 3, Shaler 0 — Liv Halliday, Maeve O’Leary and Jade Breese all scored as the Planets improved to 10-3-1 (6-2-1 WPIAL Section 1-3A).

Freeport 1, Burrell 0 — Peyton Los scored the game’s only goal on an assist from Cece Schlegel.

Alyssa Alcorn earned the shutout in net for the Yellowjackets (13-1, 9-0).

Girls volleyball

Maddy Dehart had a team-high nine kills and four blocks, leading A-C Valley to a 3-0 sweep of North Clarion by set scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-22.

Malia Page added eight kills, and Nichole Wingard dished out 18 assists to go along with three kills.

Mars 3, Avonworth 0 — The Planets swept the Antelopes by set scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-20.

Cecilia Christy tallied 13 kills and four aces in the victory, Rylee Wooldridge eight kills and Gabi Weidemann 30 assists and 10 digs.

Butler 3, North Hills 0 — Ashlan Tosadori had 10 kills and as many digs for the Golden Tornado, who won this section matchup by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-21.

Brynn Cornibe added 11 kills and Raina Lewandowski 21 more. Lewandowski is 15 kills from 500 for her career. Butler welcomes North Catholic for senior night Thursday.

Boys soccer

Colton Christie and Xavier Bartoe both scored twice while Brock Dittman tallied a goal and made five saves in net as Karns City blanked Leechburg 6-0.

Mason Bell also scored and added an assist. Davin Henry tallied two helpers.

Slippery Rock 2, Hickory 1 — The Rockets got a goal from Wade Freehling and an own goal courtesy of the Hornets.

Cody Freehling posted an assist for the Rockets.

Girls golf

In the District 9 Class 2A team championship at Pinecrest Country Club near Brookville, Moniteau placed second with 365 strokes, six back of champion Cranberry.

Juliette Brown led Moniteau with a 119. Darien Wenner paced Cranberry with a round-best 88.

Oswayo Valley placed third and Coudersport fourth.
