College sports roundup: Slippery Rock tennis pair finish 2nd at regionals; volleyball beats Cal
Slippery Rock women’s tennis duo Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi won three matches over the weekend to make the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations Atlantic Regional championship match but could not win the fourth.
The pair finished second Sunday at Bloomsburg University, losing the final 7-6 (7-5), 12-10 to Charleston’s Sara Martinez and Filippa Larsson, the tournament’s No. 1 seed.
Kempton and Kivi wait to see if they’ll earn an at-large bid to the ITA Cup on Oct. 16-19.
Lauren VonderHaar had a double-double of 14 kills and 10 blocks in Slippery Rock’s 3-1 victory (25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 28-26) over California (Pa.) on Saturday.
Callie Chevalier, Gwen McCarthy and Emry Rumbaugh had 15, 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Chevalier had 12 digs and setter Paityn Krause had 25 assists and 14 digs. SRU (9-7, 2-1 PSAC West) has won six of the last eight.
Slippery Rock fell to 0-3 in PSAC West play Saturday in a 3-1 loss to No. 4 East Stroudsburg.
Riley Cloude scored her first NCAA goal for SRU (3-6, 0-3).
Lindsey Price scored her second of the season, and The Rock women’s soccer earned an own goal to beat Pitt-Johnstown 2-0 and improve to 5-3-0 (5-1-0 PSAC West).
Kaden Reynolds scored, but Slippery Rock men’s soccer fell 3-1 to Seton Hill on Saturday. SRU is now 3-4-1 (1-1-0) after its first PSAC West loss of the season.
Westminster men’s soccer goalie Noah Wolford (Butler) set a career high with 10 saves in a 2-0 loss to Franciscan on Saturday.
