Glenda Schaffner

Schaffner

Glenda M. Smith Schaffner, 84, of Renfrew, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025.

Born on May 23, 1941, in Washington, D. C., she lived in the Prince George’s County area of Maryland while growing up.

In 1959, she met her husband, David R. Schaffner Sr., at the Marine Corps Ball. They were married on Nov. 24, 1960, and were together for an amazing 64 years.

Glenda and Dave lived in Lanham, Md., for several years and moved to Renfrew in 1969, where they stuck down the roots of their family. She nurtured and cared for that family for the next 56 years, until the end of her life. That nurturing resulted in five children, 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, that she loved dearly and unconditionally and who all loved her dearly as well. Nothing made her happier than the chaos of a holiday get-together with her family and the more, the merrier. Her decorations for the holidays and bags of goodies for the little ones at Christmas are legendary.

She was a registered nurse who practiced in several capacities but was most proud of her Abba House adult day care center and her work as a hospice volunteer with Visiting Nurses Association. Working with the aged was one of her callings, and she loved doing it.

She was a longtime active member of St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church and choir and frequently helped with the church’s fish fries and other events.

Glenda is survived by five children, Carol Hinchberger and her husband Charlie, David Schaffner and his wife, Sue, Stephen Schaffner and his wife, Michele, Tony Schaffner and his wife, Tracy, and Joe Rossmiller and his wife, Danielle; two sisters, Diane Marie Engstrom and her husband, Phil, and Lisa J. Bates and her husband, Robert. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David R. Schaffner, Sr., who passed away May 1, 2025; her parents, Glenn R. Smith and Cleone Marie Smith Dade; and her siblings Thomas Smith and Anne Cronin.

The Schaffner family extends special thanks to VNA Hospice and the caregivers who helped to care for and comfort Glenda for the past year.
