High school sports roundup: Butler boys cross country locks up WPIAL section crown

By downing North Allegheny 27-28 and Shaler 15-50 at a tri-meet Tuesday at Shaler High School, Butler’s boys cross country team finished a perfect 8-0 in WPIAL section competition and claimed the grouping’s crown.

Brendan Eicher (first, 16:40.6), Ethan Thomas (fifth, 17:38.4) and Logan Rogers (sixth, 17:49.50) were the Golden Tornado’s top finishers.

Butler’s girls bested Shaler 15-50 but couldn’t get past North Allegheny, which won 24-32 to give the Golden Tornado their only section loss this campaign. Macie McLister (second, 21:02.6), Zari Golojuh (fourth, 21:45.4) and Avery Sintz (eighth, 22:14.4) were tops for Butler.

Slippery Rock boys 27, Sharpsville 28 — Senior Hunter Doerflinger (first, 19:11) and sophomore Zachary Geisner (second, 19:35) helped the Rockets (2-2) win by the slimmest of margins.

Slippery Rock girls 15, Sharpsville 45 — Freshmen Lylah Robare (first, 22:30) and Lydia Springirth (fourth, 22:31), junior Kasey Yeager (second, 22:31) and senior Leah Perez (third, 22:31) filled the top four spots.

Seneca Valley boys 17, Central Catholic 41; Seneca Valley 15, Mars 50 — Riley McGee (first, 16:52) and Hunter Petersen (second, 17:05) helped the Raiders win the tri-meet. Seneca Valley improved to 5-2 on the season.

Seneca Valley girls 21, Oakland Catholic 40; Seneca Valley 20, Mars 43 — The Planets’ Hailey Long finished first (20:02), while the Raiders’ Elise Cilik (21:09) took third. Seneca Valley improved to 5-2.

Girls soccer

Hanna Dailey had a huge night, netting five goals and dishing out two assists, during Karns City’s 9-0 win over Punxsutawney.

Bree O’Donnell, Carleigh Lucas, Julia Dupe and Bella Shields each scored a goal, as well, while Giada Bonetto notched the shutout.

Boys soccer

Camden Slater and Colton Christie both scored for Karns City in a 2-0 win over Punxsutawney. Brock Dittman earned the clean sheet.

Slippery Rock 8, Conneaut 2 — Ryan Strother put away four goals for the Rockets, who also saw Wade Freehling, Jesse Gahring and Eli Flowers get on the scoreboard.

Butler 1, North Hills 0 — Noah Ernst connected with Noah Simmons for the lone goal in this WPIAL Section 3-4A win. Thad Mago had the shutout for the Golden Tornado (7-6, 2-5), who welcome North Allegheny on Thursday.

Mars 2, Indiana 1 — Frank Knezovich had a goal in the Planets’ overtime win.

Boys golf

Slippery Rock’s Drake Kreutz missed the cut for the PIAA individual championships after shooting a 17-over 89 at the District 10 championships.

Girls volleyball

Maddy Dehart had 10 kills and eight blocks as A-C Valley downed Cranberry in four sets. Malia Page added six kills and five digs.

Butler 3, Norwin 1 — Raina Lewandowski had 23 kills, 19 digs, two blocks and two assists as the Tornado won 28-26, 21-25, 25-17, 25-17.

Julia Mason had 42 assists, 12 digs and an ace. Ashlan Tosadori had 11 kills and 10 digs. Bryn Cornibe added eight kills, four aces, three blocks and two digs.

Moniteau 3, Redbank Valley 2 — Emily Matz had five blocks, four aces and 10 kills for the Warriors, who won by scores of 22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 24-26 and 15-5. Sayge Brunst helped with a block, seven kills and nine digs.

Slippery Rock 3, Franklin 0 — The Rockets moved to 10-2 by scores of 27-25, 25-20 and 25-20. Lexi Caldwell had four aces and 21 assists.

Mars 3, Beaver 0 — Cecilia Christy had 13 kills and Rylee Wooldridge another 10 in the non-conference Planets victory.

Brookville 3, Union 0 — The Damsels were swept by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-15. Adrianna Kriebel had four digs, and Haley Corle had a kill, six blocks and a dig.

Seneca Valley 3, Canon-McMillan 0 — No further details were provided for the Raiders’ sweep.
