PENN TWP — Anthony Cardosi’s golf journey won’t end with his effort at the WPIAL Class 3A Boys Golf Individual Championship on Monday.

His Seneca Valley teammate, Josh Marquardt, hopes it’ll lead lead him back.

Cardosi, a senior, shot a 79, 9-over par, at Butler Country Club. Marquardt, a junior, finished with the same mark Monday, as both finished with a two-round total of 13-over 155 to tie for 20th. Both fell short of the 14-golfer cut that reaches the PIAA championship at the Penn State Golf Courses on Oct. 20.

“The road doesn’t end here,” Cardosi said. “Still, it’s a little sad, but I’m ready to keep working, keep it going.”

Playing in his second straight WPIAL individual final, Cardosi knew what the pressure would be like. Marquardt said he entered with a nervous excitement.

“I love practicing, I love grinding,” Cardosi said. “This is all I work for, just to get here. Unfortunately, I didn’t play my best today, but the work paid off.”

Cardosi had his fair share of putts on the day, but “just left a lot past, left a lot short. Couldn’t make any. I struggled, but it’s tough. It happens,” he said.

“I finished poorly. I’d much rather have finished stronger than I did,” Marquardt said. “I started off really good, though. ... It was definitely approach shots at the end there that really (messed me up).”

The greens, Cardosi added, were firm, but doable. He wouldn’t offer it as an excuse.

“Everyone’s playing the same course” said Cardosi, making his fourth appearance at Butler Country Club this season.

Cardosi also played at the course in July, participating in the Isaly’s Junior Golf Tour. He finished tied for fourth by shooting 5-over 76.

“It’s challenging,” Cardosi said of the course. “If you don’t have your ‘A’ game, it can really get you. You kind of need to make sure you’re hitting fairways, hitting greens, and the putting is, I think, the biggest thing.

“These greens are some of the fastest I’ve ever played.”

Cardosi has been golfing for 10 years, competitively for five. He used to play baseball and basketball but gave those sports up to pursue success on the links. He’s been in touch with a few colleges on the Division II and III levels about playing at the next level.

Marquardt said he plans on discussing what it will take to return to the stage with Cardosi.

“Obviously, I have one more year,” Marquardt said. “Hopefully I’m at this moment again and, hopefully, I finish how I want to and make it further than I did.”
