College sports roundup: SRU football falls to No. 14; BC3 volleyball extends win streak
Slippery Rock University football dropped from No. 4 to 14 in the latest NCAA Division II rankings after Saturday’s loss to California (Pa.).
The Rock (3-1, 0-1 PSAC West) remain in the Top 25, a streak that dates back to the end of 2018. Cal’s win bumped it to No. 6, and another PSAC foe, Kutztown, moved up to SRU’s old ranking.
Butler County Community College women’s volleyball swept Pennsylvania Highlands Community College on Friday, continuing to cruise through the competition with its 11th straight sweep.
The No. 6 Pioneers are now 13-0 after the 25-11, 25-8, 25-13 victory. Anora Robare dished out 34 assists and had four aces. She fed the ball to Josie Russo (13 kills), Molly Bissell (11) and Dakota Weldon (10), giving BC3 three attackers with double-digit kills in a match for the first time this season.
The Pioneers have more than a week off before facing Potomac State and Anne Arundel Community College in a tournament Saturday.
Knoch grad Mason Phillips shot a 1-over 73 Friday, to top the leaderboard in wins over Westmoreland County Community College and Community College of Allegheny County.
BC3 plays again Tuesday.
Sophia Palermo dished out two assists as Lilia Battalini and Abby Paterline scored in Slippery Rock women’s soccer’s 2-0 win at IUP on Saturday.
SRU is now 4-2-0 (4-0-0 PSAC West) and handed the Crimson Hawks their first loss of the year.
The Rock women’s volleyball dropped a PSAC opener 3-2 (set scores: 25-22, 9-25, 25-13, 18-25, 18-16) to Shippensburg on Saturday.
Lauren VonderHaar led Slippery Rock (7-7, 0-1) with 13 kills and 10 blocks.
Slippery Rock men’s soccer slid to 2-3-1 on the year after a 3-0 Saturday loss to Shepherd.
Slippery Rock field hockey got a Maddie Orrson goal in the third quarter but fell 3-1 to visiting Millersville in a PSAC opener.
SRU is now 3-4 (0-1).
Four Butler County high school graduates led SRU women’s cross country to a third-place finish in the crimson race at Saturday’s Lock Haven Invitational.
Butler grad Jennifer Cichra came in 12th (22:10) to lead The Rock. She was followed by Seneca Valley alumna Ruthie Hughes (22:16, 16th), Moniteau grad Hannah Burgoon (22:40, 28th) and SV product Sydney Heltzell (22:45, 31st).
The men finished 10th, paced by John Juszynski’s 64th-place finish in 26:11.
