Tuff Tornado Run anticipated by children and parents alike

The long-awaited run

BUTLER TWP — Shannon McGraw went to Alameda Park Saturday morning, Sept. 27, with Hattie McGraw, 20, Lydia McGraw, 6, and Brielyn Relihan, 9, each dressed in clean clothes. By the time they left, they were covered in mud, color and foam which they acquired during a hot 2-mile run through the park.

Despite the mess the family members found themselves in, Shannon McGraw said the children had been looking forward to the day the entire year so they could once again take on the Tuff Tornado Run through Alameda Park.

Lydia said the foam was her favorite part of the race. Brielyn said it was running through paint, and Hattie McGraw said army crawling under an obstacle was her favorite part.

“It’s one of their favorite days of the year they said,” Shannon McGraw said. “They couldn’t wait.”

The Tuff Tornado Run presents a grueling challenge. It consists of 22 obstacles placed over a 2-mile course in the park, from pool noodles to foam piles to tires that people have to jump over. But it’s for a good cause — raising money for the Butler Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

Audray Muscatello Yost, a Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation board member, said money raised at the run funds the Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program, creative teaching grants and helping update technology at Butler Area School District. She said she expected more than 400 people to take part in the run Saturday.

While the run and the lead up to it are busy times for Yost and the volunteers with the scholastic foundation who help pull it off, she doesn’t skip out on the fun it presents. After hours of work setting up the course on Friday and even more time spent running the event on Saturday, Yost literally ran the event to close out the course.

“I'm the last one to go through it,” Yost said. “When the volunteers see me go through, they know they can start tearing it down.”

Yost said that while fun, the Tuff Tornado Run also presents a challenge to everyone taking it on. Many people had lost shoes by the end of the course and carried them in their hands as they ran underneath the balloon arch finish line.

One of those people was Axel Oesterling, 9, who ran the Tuff Tornado Run for the first time on Saturday. Abigail Oesterling said she and Axel wanted to do the run after hearing that a friend had run it a few times already. Axel’s favorite obstacle was the foam pile, because “it was the only one that didn’t take effort.”

Although Axel wasn’t sure about taking on the Tuff Tornado Run in coming years, Abigail Oesterling said she would give it another try.

“He made it through the run in one shoe and I carried it the rest of the way,” Oesterling said. “I had no idea what to expect, but it was fun. I liked it. I will be back next year.”
