High school sports roundup: Freeport girls soccer wins in 20T on Elena Jenkins’ goal; Butler shuts out Kiski

Elena Jenkins scored with two minutes left in the second overtime on an assist from Peyton Los, and Freeport girls soccer escaped Mt. Pleasant with a 1-0 win Saturday.

Alyssa Alcorn made a save on a Morgan Gesinski breakaway shot, according to Freeport (10-1) coach Steve Kukic, which came right before the winner.

Butler 2, Kiski Area 0 — Cecelia Wolford scored both goals in the win for the Tornado (5-5-1).

Boys soccer

Ryan Sutara scored three goals in Freeport’s 7-1 win over Greensburg Central Catholic.

Liam Dunn, Caleb Passarelli, Dante Treglia and Spencer Valasek also scored for the Yellowjackets (8-4-1).

North Catholic 2, Highlands 1 — Brody Kennedy and Nathan Salac scored second-half goals to lead the Trojans (11-1-1, 9-1 WPIAL Section 1-2A) to a comeback win.

Jackson Schlegel and Justin Garvey each had an assist.

Football

Syamir Newkirk threw a game-winning, 41-yard touchdown to Ky’zir Rowan with 5:33 left to lead Summit Academy to a 30-22 win Saturday over Rochester.

The Knights (1-5, 1-1 WPIAL Big 7 Conference) won for the first time since Sept. 6, 2024, a stretch of 13 weeks of games.

Newkirk threw a pair of first-quarter TDs to Demetris Crosby from 25 and 78 yards out. Rowan and Crosby also recorded two-point conversions.

Newkirk finished 11 of 19 for 212 passing yards. Crosby caught two passes for 103 yards and had eight carries for 50 yards.
